Boudreaux’s Animal Rescue Krewe

Timeline: 1 Week Hackathon | Theme: Nonprofit Redesign

4 UX Designers & 5 Developers

In December 2023, I had to opportunity to participate in a one week hackathon. In this hackathon I worked with 3 other UX designers and 5 developers. The theme was “Nonprofit Redesign,” as a team we got to choose a nonprofit, and spend the week conducting a website redesign for our chosen site. During our preliminary discussions, we quickly realized that among our team of 9, we had 15 pets, the majority of which were rescued. After we decided on working on an animal rescue site, BARK really stood out to us because we saw tons of potential with their active Facebook page and strong connection to the Louisiana community, but noticed there were several big problems on both of the two websites that they are currently operating.

Key Findings:

  • People have certain criteria when looking for a pet to rescue (size, breed, if they get along with other pets/animals/kids)

  • During our competitive and comparative research we found that the regular user journey took the user from the pet rescuer site to an external site (ie petfinder)

  • Being taken out of the rescue’s site to an external site was a big frustration for our users.

Solution:

Create a user flow that allows user to complete the whole pet adoption within the rescue website, that enable users to filter results to their specific needs.

UX Functions that we completed during our Research Phase:

  • Competitive & Comparative Analysis

  • Feature Analysis

  • Heuristic Evaluation

  • Six User Interviews

  • Affinity map

  • Journey map

User Interviews:

  • Pet rescuers to be able to search pets by size (weight)

  • Want to make sure their pets they were looking at fit their needs (Do the pets like other dog? Get along with cats? Age

  • Rescuers want to do some research into the organization

  • Need an easy ways to communicate with the adoption organization
